What they do
Under California Sea Grant and Ocean Protection Council funding, the Smith Lab is establishing a seed bank of thermally tolerant individuals across giant kelp and several additional kelp species. The work pairs genetics of thermal sensitivity with experimental restoration in Southern California. Material is currently held for research; no distribution pathway to farms or restoration crews has been published. This is one of the clearest examples of a California seed bank forming inside a research grant.
