Hog Island Oyster Co. — bull kelp and native nori
Marshall, Tomales Bay, Marin County · San Francisco Bay
Tier: registeredcommercial
What they do
Hog Island began by harvesting native Pyropia (nori) that recruited naturally onto its oyster racks, and modified its permits in 2022 to sell it commercially. Separately it is a named partner with GreenWave and The Nature Conservancy in a bull kelp cultivation-strategy pilot in Tomales Bay, working with seeded line. The kelp side remains a pilot rather than a seed business, but the site is one of the few California operations with both hatchery experience and water-column leases. It is a plausible early candidate for a certified California seed source.
